November 11, 2008 Hoover Dam and "The Strip"

This was down inside the dam. We couldn't
touch it or kick it because it would alert the
earthquake people.
Hoover Dam memorial.

Down in the dam, these are some of the
generators. The ones with the lights on top
are the ones that are running.

A tunnel that we got to walk through
inside the dam.

Looking down into the dam from the walkway.

The big cement dam.

Guess who?

My favorite "hardhat".

A wrench they use. Look how big it is.!

Colorado River before the dam.

Note the new expansion bridge being built
so you will be able to drive across. (Top right and
left coming out of the mountain.)
Top of the dam looking at all the power towers
and down the river.

"Excalibur" hotel in Vegas.

John at a restaurant in the New York, New York
hotel. Notice the bowl behind him that looks
like a crown!! He hates this picture.

Yes, I am hungry.

The Statue of Liberty outside of New York
New York.

Hoover Dam! It is unbelievably large! The guide said that there is enough cement in the dam to make a road from San Francisco to New York, or a sidewalk around the equator!

The cement is still not totally cured from when they built it in the 30's. It takes about 100 years before it is cured. The wall is free standing...no re bar in it at all. It stays there due to the pressure of the Colorado River. They have had earthquakes up to 5.2 and it hardly moves. The guide says it should withstand an 8.? earthquake. That would be SOME earthquake.

After the tour we went down to the strip to buy tickets to Mama Mia for tomorrow night. We then walked through the Luxor, and by Excalibur and into New York, New York. It has been 15+ years since I have been to Vegas.....it didn't even seem like the same place I remembered.

There are like 12 lane freeways going by these hotels. It is amazing. They claim they are hurting a bit, but it still seemed pretty busy to me.

We had a pizza at New York restaurant...it was good...I got my pizza fix.

Well, we figured we will see tomorrow night, so called it a night.

Let's try this again! Passwords...
Loved the pics and when you come around Fenton there are many goats of all sizes in Mom's backyard (almost), long story, but a good one.

The dam pics are amazing - I've not been out west driving, only flying in and out. Looks like I've missed a lot!
